If your AC is blowing warm air in Spanish Fort, the most common culprits are a tripped breaker on the outdoor unit, a failed start/run capacitor, a clogged air filter that froze the indoor coil, or a refrigerant leak. The first three you can sometimes catch in a two-minute walk-around. Refrigerant problems and electrical faults are repair calls.

First, the two-minute checks

Before you call anyone, do a quick lap. It is July, the heat index off Mobile Bay is brutal, and half the time the fix takes a flashlight and a thermostat dip.

  1. Set the thermostat lower. Move it to 68°F in COOL mode and switch the fan from ON to AUTO. With fan ON, the blower runs even when the system is not actually cooling — that pushes room-temperature air through your vents and feels exactly like "warm air."
  2. Walk out to the condenser. Listen for the fan blade and the compressor hum. If the outdoor unit is dead silent but the indoor blower is running, you have found the problem — power, capacitor, or contactor.
  3. Check the filter and the indoor coil. A filter that has not been swapped since the spring tune-up is the leading cause of a frozen evaporator on the Eastern Shore. If you see ice on the copper line at the air handler, shut the system off at the thermostat and run only the fan for an hour to thaw it before doing anything else.
  4. Pop the breaker panel. Spanish Fort's housing stock skews late-'90s — the median home was built around 1999 — and most of those panels have a dedicated 240V breaker for the condenser. If it is tripped, reset it once. If it trips again right away, stop and call.

The four causes we see all summer

Tripped breaker or blown disconnect fuse

After a thunderstorm rolls across the Causeway, we get a wave of these. The condenser breaker pops, the indoor air handler keeps running, and the homeowner thinks the whole system is broken. A one-time reset is fine. A breaker that trips a second time is telling you something — a shorted compressor, a burned contactor, or a wiring fault from age, rodents, or storm water. Do not keep flipping it.

Failed capacitor

The start/run capacitor is the soda-can-sized component that gives the compressor and outdoor fan motor the kick they need to start. In this climate — muggy or oppressive about six months a year, peak humidity around 79% in August — capacitors take a beating. When one fails, the outdoor fan often will not spin, or it will hum and stop. This is one of the most common calls we get from homes in Stonebridge, TimberCreek, and the older sections off Hwy 181. It is a routine part swap for a licensed tech, but it requires discharging stored voltage safely.

Dirty filter and frozen evaporator coil

A choked filter starves the indoor coil of airflow. With less air moving across it, the coil drops below freezing, ice forms, and now no air gets through at all. We see this constantly in homes around Eastern Shore Centre and the newer builds off the I-10 corridor. The fix is straightforward: change the filter on a 30- to 60-day cadence — here's how often to swap it on the Gulf Coast — keep return grilles unblocked, and book a maintenance visit so the coil gets cleaned before pollen and dust load it up again.

Low refrigerant (a leak, not "low on Freon")

A sealed system does not "use" refrigerant. If it is low, it is leaking. Symptoms: warm air at the vents, ice on the larger suction line at the condenser, a hissing sound near the indoor coil, longer-than-normal run times. Refrigerant work is licensed-tech-only — we will find the leak, lay out repair vs. replacement, and recharge to spec. Do not let anyone just "top it off" without finding the leak. That is money out the door.

Why does this happen so often on the Eastern Shore?

Three reasons, all local.

The housing stock is in the replacement window. The median Spanish Fort home was built around 1999. That puts a lot of original equipment right at the 20–25 year mark, which is exactly when capacitors, contactors, and compressors start giving up.

The climate runs the system hard. Muggy or oppressive conditions from mid-April through late October, July averaging a 90°F high and a 74°F overnight low, and roughly 66 inches of rain a year — most of it during cooling season — means your AC works longer hours per year than units in almost any other part of the country.

Storm exposure. Hurricane Sally in September 2020 showed every homeowner in Baldwin County what a real wind event does to outdoor equipment — bent fan blades, loose wire nuts, corroded contactors that run hot for years afterward. Storm damage like that can linger long after the power comes back, and coastal humidity does the slow version of the same thing year-round.

When to stop troubleshooting and call
