Why Does My AC Freeze Up in the Summer Heat?

Your AC freezes up in summer heat for one of two reasons: airflow into the indoor coil is restricted (dirty filter, blocked return, dirty blower wheel, or dirty evaporator coil), or the system is low on refrigerant. Both cause the coil to drop below 32°F, and the humidity condensing on it turns to ice instead of running down the drain. Once ice forms, it blocks even more airflow, the coil gets colder, and you end up with a block of ice where your evaporator used to be.

The Counterintuitive Part: 90°F Outside, 32°F Inside Your Coil

I get this call almost weekly from Spanish Fort homeowners, and it always sounds the same. "It's 93 degrees on the Causeway, my unit is running nonstop, and there's ice on the copper line." That's the giveaway. The refrigerant inside your evaporator coil normally runs around 40°F. When something throws it out of balance, that coil temperature drops, and a Spanish Fort summer with 79% humidity in August gives it plenty of moisture to freeze onto.

Spanish Fort sits right on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, and we get muggy or oppressive air roughly six months out of the year — mid-April through late October. July averages a 90°F high with a 74°F low, and we get something like 66 inches of rain a year, with July being the wettest month. That combination means your AC is pulling enormous amounts of moisture out of your home. When the coil freezes, all that latent load has to go somewhere — usually onto the ice, then onto your floor when it finally thaws.

What To Do Right Now (Before You Call Anyone)

If you walk up to the air handler in your attic or closet and see ice, here's the order:

  1. Turn the thermostat from COOL to OFF. Do not leave it set to 60°F hoping it'll "catch up." It won't.
  2. Switch the fan from AUTO to ON. This pushes warm house air across the coil and speeds up the thaw. Expect two to six hours.
  3. Put towels under the air handler and around the drain pan. A full coil's worth of ice can overwhelm the secondary drain.
  4. Change the filter. If it looks like a gray pancake, that may be your whole problem. A clean 1-inch filter every 30 days during cooling season is the bare minimum here — and on the Gulf Coast, how often you change that filter matters more than most people think.
  5. Check every supply register and return grille. Closed registers, furniture against returns, and crushed flex duct in the attic are the silent killers.

Once the ice is fully gone — and I mean fully, no frost left on the suction line — you can flip cooling back on for a test. If it freezes again within a day, you've got a real problem and you need a tech with gauges.

Why Spanish Fort Homes See This More Than You'd Expect

A few things stack against us out here. The median home in Spanish Fort was built around 1999, which puts a big chunk of the housing stock right in the 20-to-25-year window where original AC equipment is on borrowed time. Coils get dirty, refrigerant charges drift, and indoor blower wheels cake up with the dust and dander a quarter-century of family life leaves behind. We service homes all over Spanish Fort — from TimberCreek's 700-plus homesites around the 27-hole golf course, to Spanish Fort Estates, Churchill, Blakeley Forest, Blakeley Oaks, The Highlands, The Lakes, Shenandoah, and out toward Malbis — and the freeze-up call is one of the most common we get from mid-June through August.

Newer construction isn't immune either. The Stonebridge community (D.R. Horton and Truland have been building there since 2015, the one with Stonebridge Elementary) calls us with frozen builder-grade systems too. A new system installed in a hurry on a hot day can end up low on charge from day one, and you don't notice until the first 95°F afternoon.

Then there's Hurricane Sally. September 16, 2020 wasn't that long ago, and we're still finding storm-related damage years later. Bent line sets, stressed coils, and rooftop debris that nobody ever pulled off the condenser. Slow refrigerant leaks from Sally are still showing up on the Eastern Shore in 2026.

How Do I Know If It's Airflow or Refrigerant?

You don't, not without tools. But here are the patterns I see most:

  • Airflow problem: The filter is filthy, the coil only freezes after the system has been running hard for hours, and the air coming out of the vents feels weak even before the ice forms. That same weak-airflow condition is often what's behind it when the AC is blowing warm air instead of cold. Common in older homes near Battleship Parkway, the USS Alabama / Battleship Memorial Park side of the bay, and out past Historic Blakeley State Park where folks forget the filter for months at a stretch.
  • Refrigerant problem: The filter is clean, the system freezes within an hour or two of starting, you hear hissing near the indoor unit or outdoor unit, or you can see oily residue on the copper. That's a leak, and adding refrigerant without finding the leak just buys you a few weeks.
  • Both: Honestly, most of the systems I cut into have a little of both — a marginal charge AND a dirty coil. Get a real AC repair visit and let somebody measure it.

When To Call a Pro

Call us when:

  • The system freezes again within 24 hours of a full thaw and a filter change.
  • You see ice on the outdoor unit's suction line (the big insulated copper one). That's almost always low charge.
  • Water is coming through a ceiling — that secondary drain is doing its job, but you're days away from drywall damage.
  • The blower won't turn on at all after the thaw. You may have a clogged condensate drain that tripped a float switch.

This isn't a DIY fix past the filter and thermostat steps. Refrigerant work in Alabama requires EPA certification, and a misdiagnosed leak will cost you a compressor.

The Bottom Line

A frozen AC in a Spanish Fort summer isn't a freak event — it's the system telling you something is wrong with airflow or charge, and the heat and humidity off Mobile Bay just amplify it. Shut it off, let it thaw, change the filter, and if it doesn't hold, get somebody out before the compressor pays the price.

  • How long does it take a frozen AC to thaw out?
    Usually two to six hours with the system off and the fan-only mode running. In a humid Spanish Fort summer, a fully iced-over coil can take longer, so give it a full afternoon before testing again.
  • Can I just keep running my AC if it freezes up?
    No. Running a frozen system can wreck the compressor, which is the most expensive part. Shut the cooling off, switch the fan to ON to help thaw the coil, and figure out the cause before you turn cooling back on.
  • Is a frozen AC always low on refrigerant?
    Not always. The two biggest causes on the Eastern Shore are restricted airflow (dirty filter, blocked return, dirty evaporator coil) and low refrigerant from a leak. A tech needs to measure pressures and airflow to know which one is the culprit.
  • Why does my AC freeze up at night but work during the day?
    Outdoor temperatures drop at night, so the system runs longer cycles against a cooler load. If airflow or charge is already marginal, the coil temperature dips below freezing and ice builds up overnight while you sleep.
  • Could Hurricane Sally damage have caused my AC to freeze up years later?
    It's possible. Storm-bent line sets and stressed coil fins from Hurricane Sally can develop slow refrigerant leaks or restrict airflow over time. We still see late-effect storm damage on Baldwin County systems.
