How Often Should You Change Your AC Filter on the Gulf Coast?

Coastal humidity, pollen, and storm dust mean Spanish Fort homes need filter changes every 30 to 60 days. Here is the simple schedule we tell customers.

Change it every 30 to 60 days from mid-April through late October. That is the muggy half of the year on the Eastern Shore, and it is the half that decides whether your AC limps through August or sails through it. Pets, pollen weeks, or a dusty week after a storm pushes you to 30. A sealed-up house with no pets and a fresh filter can stretch to 60. In the mild winter months, every 90 days is fine.

That is the whole answer. The rest of this post is the why, because once you understand what is happening to that filter, you stop forgetting to change it.

Why coastal humidity eats filters faster

Spanish Fort sits directly on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, which is great for sunsets off the Causeway and rough on air filters. We get muggy or oppressive conditions for roughly six months a year. July averages a 90-degree high with a 74-degree low, and August humidity peaks around 79%. The system runs long cycles, the blower moves a lot of air, and every cubic foot of that air is loaded with pollen, mold spores, fine dust, and the salt-tinged moisture coming off the bay.

A filter that would last 90 days in a dry climate gets visibly gray here in about half that time. It is not your imagination. We service homes from Stonebridge and TimberCreek to Churchill, Blakeley Forest, Blakeley Oaks, Spanish Fort Estates, The Highlands, The Lakes, and Shenandoah, and the pattern is the same in every one of them. The filter loads up fast because the air here is working hard.

Pollen season is its own animal. Late February through April, the oak and pine push everything yellow, and the return grilles in older homes off Highway 225 and US-31 will turn the same color in a week. After Hurricane Sally in September 2020, we changed filters in homes that looked like the air handler had been sandblasted. Storms tear up shingles, fences, and yards, and that debris ends up in your return air for weeks.

How do I actually know when to change the filter?

Pull it. Hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through the pleats, it is done. That is the only test that matters. The calendar is a guide; the eye is the judge.

A few other tells we hear from customers all over the Eastern Shore:

  • The system runs but the house feels cool and clammy instead of cool and dry.
  • One room is noticeably warmer than the rest.
  • You hear the return grille whistling or sucking hard.
  • Ice on the copper line set outside.
  • The unit is running short cycles, kicking on and off every few minutes.

Any one of those, check the filter first. It is the cheapest fix in this trade and it is the most ignored one.

The MERV tradeoff most homeowners get wrong

Filter ratings run from about MERV 1 up to MERV 16. Bigger number, finer filtration. Sounds like you should just buy the highest one on the shelf at the Eastern Shore Centre hardware store, right?

Don't. For most residential systems built in the last 20 years, MERV 8 to 11 is the right range. Here is why: every notch up on MERV is a notch down on airflow. Your blower was sized for a specific static pressure. Slap a MERV 13 1-inch filter on a system designed for MERV 8, and you have choked it. On a 95-degree, 78%-humidity afternoon, that choked system cannot move enough warm return air across the cold coil. The coil temperature drops, condensation freezes on it, and now you have a block of ice where your evaporator used to be.

We get this call constantly in July and August. Homeowner upgraded to a "premium" filter, thought they were doing the right thing, and the unit froze solid two days later. If you want higher filtration than MERV 11, the right answer is a thick media filter cabinet (4 or 5 inches deep) sized for your blower, not a denser 1-inch filter crammed into the existing slot. That is a conversation to have during a maintenance visit, not a Saturday trip to the store.

What a clogged filter actually does to your system

A clogged filter starves the return. Three things happen, in order:

  1. Airflow drops. The blower is trying to pull air through a wall of lint. Static pressure climbs, the motor works harder, and warm room air is not getting to the coil fast enough.
  2. The coil freezes. With not enough warm air crossing it, the refrigerant inside the coil stays too cold for too long, and condensation freezes into ice. Now you have a glacier where you used to have heat exchange. A dirty filter is the most common reason an AC freezes up in the summer heat, and it is the first thing we check.
  3. Short cycling and clamminess. Before the full freeze-up, the system short cycles. It hits the thermostat setpoint on dry-bulb temperature, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull humidity out. The house reads 74 on the wall and feels like 80.

The repair from a frozen coil is not always cheap. You are looking at a service call, sometimes a thawed and inspected coil, sometimes a damaged blower motor if it ran long enough overheated. All of that from a $12 filter nobody changed.

A simple schedule that works for the Eastern Shore

Here is what we tell folks across Spanish Fort, Malbis, and the rest of Baldwin County:

  • April through October: Pleated MERV 8 to 11. Change every 30 to 60 days. Check it at the first of every month.
  • November through March: Same filter. Every 60 to 90 days is fine.
  • After any storm or heavy wind: Check it. Sally taught a lot of homes that lesson the hard way.
  • Pets in the house: Stay on the 30-day side, always.
  • New construction: Drywall dust will load up a filter in 2 weeks the first month. Change it early and often the first summer.

Write the date on the cardboard edge with a Sharpie when you put it in. That one habit beats every fancy reminder app.

When a filter change is not the fix

If you are changing the filter on schedule and the house still feels humid, or you are still seeing ice, or one room is still warm, the filter is no longer the problem. That is a duct, refrigerant charge, or coil cleanliness issue, and it needs eyes on it. If the air coming out of the vents is flat-out warm, that is a different diagnosis — start with why your AC is blowing warm air.
