Why Is My Summer Power Bill So High in Spanish Fort?

If your Spanish Fort power bill jumped this summer, your air conditioner is almost certainly the reason. We sit on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay with about six muggy-to-oppressive months, July average highs near 90F, and August humidity around 79%. The AC is not just cooling air, it is dragging gallons of water out of it day and night. Add an aging or oversized unit, dirty coils, or a thermostat set in the 60s, and the meter spins. Here is what is actually driving the bill and what moves the needle.

The humidity load is half the work

A lot of folks think the AC's only job is to drop the temperature. On the Gulf Coast, removing moisture is just as much of the load. Spanish Fort sits directly on Mobile Bay, gets around 66 to 67 inches of rain a year with July as the wettest month, and stays muggy from mid-April through late October. Every time the system runs, it is condensing humidity off the indoor coil and draining it outside.

That matters for your bill in two ways. First, dehumidifying takes energy whether the air feels cool or not. Second, if the house feels clammy at 74F, most people punch the thermostat down to 70F to "fix" it — which doubles down on runtime instead of fixing the humidity. Is your AC oversized? It is probably the #1 hidden cause

This is one of the most common calls we get across Spanish Fort, Daphne, and Fairhope: "my power bill is high and the house still feels sticky." Nine times out of ten, the unit is too big for the house.

Here is what an oversized AC does:

  • Blasts cold air for a few minutes and shuts off
  • Never runs long enough to wring humidity out of the air
  • Cycles on and off all afternoon, which is the most expensive way to run a compressor
  • Leaves the indoor air feeling damp, so you set the thermostat lower, which makes it cycle even more

Baldwin EMC and Riviera Utilities — the rate side of the equation

Most of Spanish Fort is served by Baldwin EMC, with some areas on Riviera Utilities. Rates and rate structures change, and summer demand pushes them up regardless. There is not much you can do about the rate, but you can do plenty about how many kilowatt-hours you burn. The biggest levers are runtime, system efficiency, and the building envelope.

  1. Get a real AC maintenance visit. A clean coil, verified refrigerant charge, healthy capacitor, and clean blower wheel can quietly cut runtime. A neglected outdoor coil — common on homes near the bay where pollen, oak debris, and salt air settle — can add 10 to 20% to your bill before you ever notice the house is warmer.   2. Change your filter. Every 30 to 60 days in summer. A clogged filter starves airflow, ices the coil, and burns power.
  3. Raise the thermostat one or two degrees and let the fan run on auto. Most homes do well around 74-76F. Every degree lower means meaningfully more runtime.
  4. Fix the humidity problem, not the temperature. If 74F feels sticky, the answer is a dehumidifier or a variable-speed system, not a lower setpoint.
  5. Seal and insulate. Attic insulation in a lot of 1990s-era Spanish Fort homes is thin by modern standards. Air-sealing the attic plane is the single highest-ROI envelope upgrade in this climate.
  6. Stop closing vents. It does not save money. It raises duct pressure and can freeze your coil.

Why does my bill spike worse after a storm?

Hurricane Sally hit Baldwin County on September 16, 2020 and knocked power out across the area. Storms shift attic insulation, tear ductwork loose, and let condensate lines clog with debris.
