Why Is My House Still Humid With the AC Running in Spanish Fort?
Your AC blows cold but the air still feels sticky? On the Eastern Shore that's almost always an oversizing or fan-setting problem — not a cooling one. Here's the fix.


If your Spanish Fort air conditioner is blowing cold but the house still feels damp, the problem usually isn't cooling — it's dehumidification. Cooling the air and pulling moisture out of it are two separate jobs, and on the Eastern Shore the second one is where most systems fall short. Here's why it happens and how to fix it.
Cold air and dry air aren't the same thing
Your AC dehumidifies as a side effect of cooling: warm, humid air passes over a cold indoor coil, moisture condenses on that coil like sweat on a glass of iced tea, and it drains away outside. But that only works if the system runs long enough for the water to collect and drain.
That matters more here than almost anywhere. Spanish Fort sits right on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, and the Causeway-side air is muggy or worse for roughly six months a year — from mid-April into late October — with humidity peaking near 79 percent in August. On a bad day your AC is trying to pull gallons of water out of your indoor air. A system that runs fine in a dry climate can leave a Spanish Fort home cold and clammy.
Is your AC oversized?
This is the single most common cause we see across the Eastern Shore. A unit that's too big for the house cools it down fast, satisfies the thermostat in a few minutes, and shuts off — long before it has run enough to dehumidify. Then it kicks back on, blasts cold air again, and shuts off again. Comfortable temperature, swampy air.
Oversizing is especially common in Spanish Fort's newer subdivisions — places like Stonebridge and TimberCreek — where builder systems were sometimes picked by a square-foot rule of thumb instead of a real room-by-room load calculation. The tell-tale sign: the house cools quickly but feels sticky, and the outdoor unit cycles on and off every few minutes instead of running in longer, steadier stretches.
AUTO or ON — which fan setting actually helps?
Set the thermostat fan to AUTO, not ON. It's free, and it's the fix people miss most often.
On the ON setting, the blower runs continuously, even between cooling cycles. The problem: right after the compressor stops, the indoor coil is still wet. Keep blowing air across that wet coil and you re-evaporate the water you just removed and send it straight back into the house through your ducts. AUTO shuts the fan off with the compressor, so that water drains outside instead of re-humidifying your living room.
A two-minute checklist before you call anyone
- Set the fan to AUTO, mode to COOL, and the temperature around 72-74°F.
- Put an inexpensive hygrometer in your main living area. You want it reading 45-55 percent.
- Change the air filter. A clogged filter shortens run time and can freeze the coil, which kills dehumidification.
- Make sure supply vents in your dampest rooms are open, not closed off.
- Watch whether the AC short-cycles — on and off every few minutes. That points back to oversizing or a charge problem.
Do those and give it a full day. If the house still feels muggy, the fix is bigger than a setting.
When the real fix is mechanical
If your system is oversized or simply getting older, two solutions genuinely move the needle in our climate:
- A variable-speed system. Instead of blasting at full power and quitting, it runs long and slow at low speed — which is exactly the long runtime that dehumidifies a humid Spanish Fort home. Damp indoor air isn't just uncomfortable. Above about 60 percent humidity you're in the zone where mold, mildew, and dust mites thrive — and on the Eastern Shore, where outdoor humidity does the work for them, a leaky or undersized-for-dehumidification setup gives them a standing invitation.
