Baldwin County HVAC FAQ

Straight Answers From the Team That Works on These Systems Every Day

These are the questions Baldwin County homeowners ask us most — about repairs, maintenance, system choices, humidity, and what to do when something goes wrong. Every answer comes from what we see on service calls across the county. If your question isn’t covered here, call (251) 300-9817 and ask us directly.

Repair & Troubleshooting

Why is my AC blowing warm air?

The most common causes are a tripped outdoor breaker, low refrigerant from a leak, a failed compressor, or a severely clogged air filter. Check the breaker and filter first — both are free fixes. If the system is running but still blowing warm air after those checks, the problem needs professional diagnosis. Call (251) 300-9817 and we’ll get a technician out.

How much does HVAC repair cost in Baldwin County?

Repair costs depend on what’s wrong. Basic component replacements like capacitors and contactors are the most affordable tier. Mid-range repairs like blower motors and refrigerant leak repair cost more. Major repairs involving compressors or evaporator coils are the most expensive and usually start the conversation about whether to repair or replace. We always provide upfront pricing before starting work — no surprises.

Should I repair or replace my AC?

It depends on the system’s age, the cost of the repair relative to new equipment, and the repair history. A system under ten years old with a first-time failure is almost always worth fixing. A system past fifteen years facing a major repair is almost always better replaced. If your system uses R-22 refrigerant, any major repair tips heavily toward replacement because R-22 supply is limited and increasingly expensive.

Why does my AC keep turning on and off?

Short cycling usually points to an oversized system, a failing compressor, a refrigerant issue, a dirty condenser coil, or an electrical component on its way out. It drives up energy costs and accelerates wear on the compressor. If your system is cycling every few minutes instead of running steady 10-15 minute cycles, call for service before the short cycling causes more expensive damage.

My AC smells musty — can you fix that?

Yes. A musty smell usually means biological growth on the evaporator coil or inside the drain pan — both common in Baldwin County’s humidity. A professional coil cleaning, drain line flush, and air handler inspection usually resolves it. If it keeps coming back, UV germicidal lights can prevent regrowth between maintenance visits.

How do I know if my AC is broken or if it’s something I can fix?

Check four things first: the thermostat (correct mode, correct temperature, fresh batteries), both breakers (indoor and outdoor — power surges trip them regularly here), the air filter (a severely clogged filter can shut the system down), and the condensate drain (a clogged drain triggers the safety shutoff on many systems). If all four check out and the system still isn’t working right, the problem needs a technician.

Do you repair all HVAC brands?

Yes. We work on every major brand — Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York, and all others. Central air systems, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, gas furnaces, electric furnaces, and package units. If it heats or cools a Baldwin County home or business, we service it.

Heating & Furnace

Do most Baldwin County homes use heat pumps or furnaces?

Most homes here use electric heat pumps. Natural gas infrastructure doesn’t reach most of the county, so gas furnaces are less common than in other parts of Alabama. Electric furnaces are still found in older homes and manufactured housing, but heat pumps have become the default for new installations because they handle both heating and cooling efficiently from a single system.

Why is my heater blowing cold air?

The most common cause is a heat pump running in defrost mode — a normal cycle where the system briefly reverses to clear ice from the outdoor coil, sending cool air through the vents for a few minutes. If the cold air lasts more than 10 to 15 minutes, the problem is usually a failed reversing valve, low refrigerant, or backup heat strips that aren’t activating. Call (251) 300-9817 and we’ll diagnose it.

How often should I service my heating system?

At least once a year in the fall before heating season — ideally September or October. Since most Baldwin County homes use heat pumps for both heating and cooling, the fall heating tune-up pairs with a spring cooling tune-up for two visits per year. The Cool Club membership schedules both visits automatically.

What heating options work best for mobile homes?

Heat pumps are the strongest option for most manufactured homes. Many older mobile homes came with electric furnaces that are expensive to run. A heat pump upgrade provides both heating and cooling at significantly lower operating costs. We evaluate the existing ductwork and electrical service before recommending the upgrade.

Can you install gas furnaces?

Yes, for homes with existing natural gas service. Gas coverage varies by address across Baldwin County, so check with your utility provider to confirm whether gas is available at your home. For homes without gas service, we recommend heat pumps as the primary heating system.

Installation & Replacement

What size AC do I need?

The right size is determined by a Manual J load calculation — not a square-footage estimate. Manual J accounts for your home’s insulation, windows, ceiling height, ductwork location, and Baldwin County’s humidity load. Oversizing is the most common installation mistake in humid climates because an oversized system cools the air quickly but shuts off before removing adequate moisture.

What SEER2 rating should I get?

The federal minimum for the Southeast is 14.3 SEER2. For most Baldwin County homeowners, a mid-range efficiency rating hits the sweet spot between performance, cost, and long-term savings. The long cooling season here amplifies the difference — higher efficiency adds up significantly when the system runs six to seven months a year.

How long does installation take?

Most residential installations are completed in a single day — typically six to ten hours. Installations that include ductwork modifications or electrical upgrades may extend to two days. We provide a clear timeline before work begins and test the system at full operation before we leave.

What’s the best HVAC system for Baldwin County?

A heat pump is the right choice for most homes here. Heat pumps handle both heating and cooling from a single system and perform at their best in our mild winter climate. For coastal homes in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, we recommend coastal-rated equipment with corrosion-resistant hardware. For homes with natural gas service, a dual fuel system — heat pump plus gas furnace backup — is one of the most efficient setups available.

What brands do you install?

We install and service every major residential brand available through our distribution channels. Air Solutions is also a certified RUUD Pro Partner — a manufacturer-vetted designation that requires maintaining at least a 4-star customer rating, ongoing factory training, and demonstrated expertise with RUUD heating, cooling, and water heating systems. That partnership gives our customers access to the full RUUD product line along with exclusive warranty coverage and financing options. For other brands, we match the equipment to the home’s requirements, the homeowner’s budget, and the specific conditions of the installation.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We offer flexible financing options for installations and major repairs, including promotional periods and fixed monthly payment plans. Ask your technician or call (251) 300-9817 to learn about current options.

Maintenance & Cool Club

What is the Cool Club?

The Cool Club is our maintenance membership. It includes two professional tune-ups per year (spring cooling and fall heating), priority scheduling during peak season, and member discounts on repairs and replacements. It’s the simplest way to protect your HVAC investment and avoid surprise breakdowns.

How often should I change my air filter?

Monthly during the cooling season (April through October) and every two to three months during the heating season. Baldwin County’s extended cooling season, persistent humidity, and outdoor allergen levels mean filters clog faster here than national averages suggest.

Is the Cool Club worth it?

Most members save more in repair discounts alone than the membership costs. Beyond the direct savings, the twice-a-year inspections catch small problems before they become emergency repairs, and the documented maintenance history protects your manufacturer’s warranty.

What does an AC tune-up include?

Cleaning the evaporator and condenser coils, checking refrigerant levels, testing and tightening electrical connections, inspecting capacitors and contactors, flushing the condensate drain line, replacing the air filter, calibrating the thermostat, inspecting the blower motor, and running the system under load to verify it’s operating correctly. For coastal homes, the coil cleaning is especially critical.

When is the best time to schedule maintenance?

Spring maintenance (cooling tune-up) should be scheduled in March or April — before the cooling season starts and before every HVAC company in the county has a backlog. Fall maintenance (heating tune-up) should be scheduled in September or October — before the first cold front. Cool Club members have both visits scheduled automatically.

What happens if I skip maintenance?

Problems develop silently and compound. Dirty coils increase energy consumption. Slow refrigerant leaks worsen until the compressor overheats. Electrical connections corrode until a cheap contactor takes out an expensive compressor. The routine tune-up that would have caught these problems becomes an urgent emergency repair at the worst possible time.

Does maintenance really extend equipment life?

Yes — by several years in Baldwin County depending on coastal proximity. Equipment near the Gulf wears faster than inland equipment, and the gap between maintained and neglected systems is wider here than almost anywhere. Regular maintenance is the single biggest factor in how long your system lasts.

Indoor Air Quality & Humidity

Why does my home feel humid even with the AC running?

Your AC removes moisture as a byproduct of cooling, but it only dehumidifies while actively running a cooling cycle. On a warm but not hot day — common in Baldwin County’s spring and fall — the house may not need cooling but still needs dehumidification. A whole-home dehumidifier operates independently of the cooling cycle and maintains a precise humidity setpoint regardless of temperature.

What humidity level should my home be?

Indoor relative humidity should stay between 45% and 55%. Below 45% can cause dry skin and static. Above 55% favors dust mites. Above 60% enables active mold growth. In Baldwin County, outdoor humidity regularly exceeds 80% — without active management, indoor levels follow.

Can my HVAC system cause mold?

It can create conditions that allow mold to grow. The evaporator coil and drain pan stay wet during cooling cycles, and in our humidity those surfaces may never fully dry between cycles. Regular maintenance — coil cleaning, drain line flushing — prevents this. UV germicidal lights provide ongoing protection between visits.

Does salt air affect indoor air quality?

Yes. Salt particles enter the home through ventilation, open doors, and duct leaks — particularly in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and bayfront communities. Inside the HVAC system, salt accelerates corrosion and creates conditions for biological growth. Regular coil cleaning and UV lights are the most effective countermeasures.

What’s the difference between an air scrubber and UV lights?

UV lights kill biological growth on the evaporator coil surface — a targeted treatment that keeps the coil clean between visits. An air scrubber sends purifying molecules through the duct system and into every room, treating airborne contaminants throughout the home. Many homeowners use both as part of a layered approach.

Do you offer duct cleaning?

We don’t perform duct cleaning as a standalone service. Most research doesn’t support routine duct cleaning as a meaningful air quality improvement for typical homes. What we do offer is duct sealing, duct repair, and indoor air quality solutions — air scrubbers, UV lights, whole-home dehumidifiers — that address root causes rather than symptoms.

Will a dehumidifier help with mold?

A whole-home dehumidifier prevents new mold growth by keeping humidity below the threshold mold requires. It won’t remove existing mold — active growth needs professional remediation. After remediation, a dehumidifier prevents recurrence by maintaining dry conditions.

Emergency & Storm

Do you offer 24/7 emergency HVAC repair?

Yes. We dispatch technicians around the clock for situations that can’t safely wait until business hours. Call (251) 300-9817 at any time. Cool Club members receive priority scheduling.

What qualifies as an HVAC emergency?

Complete system failure in extreme heat — especially with elderly residents, young children, or anyone with heat-sensitive medical conditions. An electrical burning smell from the system. A gas smell near a gas furnace (leave the house immediately). Active water damage from a condensate failure. A system that’s underperforming but not dangerous can typically wait for a regular appointment.

What should I do if my AC fails on a weekend?

Call (251) 300-9817. We dispatch technicians on weekends and holidays. While you wait, close blinds on sun-facing windows, open interior doors to equalize temperatures, and avoid using heat-generating appliances.

How do I prepare my HVAC for hurricane season?

Shut the system down at the breaker when a storm approaches. Cover the outdoor unit with plywood secured by straps. Clear everything within 10 to 15 feet that could become a projectile. After the storm, do not restart until the unit has been visually inspected for debris, water damage, or displacement. Wait at least 30 minutes after power returns before restarting.

What do I do if my HVAC floods during a storm?

Do not restart a system that’s been submerged or exposed to significant water. Floodwater damages electrical connections, contaminates refrigerant, and compromises internal components in ways that aren’t always visible. Call for a professional assessment before touching the thermostat.

What happens to my HVAC during a power outage?

When power returns, wait at least 30 minutes before turning the thermostat back on — this gives the compressor’s crankcase heater time to warm the oil and refrigerant. Skipping this wait can cause compressor damage on startup. If anything sounds wrong after restart, turn the system off and call for service. A whole-home surge protector prevents the voltage spikes that cause most post-outage damage.

Costs & Financing

Is heating or cooling more expensive in Baldwin County?

Cooling costs significantly more. The cooling season runs about seven months with outdoor temperatures routinely in the 90s, while the heating season spans roughly December through February with mild temperatures. Efficiency improvements that target cooling deliver a bigger return than improvements targeting heating.

How can I lower my energy bills?

The most effective steps: schedule regular maintenance, replace air filters monthly during cooling season, set the thermostat fan to AUTO not ON, keep the thermostat at a moderate setting, and seal duct leaks if your ducts run through the attic. Upgrading to higher-efficiency equipment when replacement time comes provides the biggest long-term impact.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes — for installations, replacements, and major system upgrades. We’ll come to your home, evaluate the current system, and give you a written estimate at no charge. Call (251) 300-9817 to schedule.

About Air Solutions

How do I choose the right HVAC company?

Look for proper Alabama HVAC licensing, adequate insurance, and a documented track record in your area. Ask how they size equipment — any company that quotes based on square footage alone without mentioning a Manual J load calculation is cutting corners. Check reviews for specifics, not just star counts.

Is Air Solutions licensed and insured?

Yes. We hold Alabama HVAC contractor license AL#23194, are fully insured, and are BBB accredited. We’re also a certified RUUD Pro Partner — a designation that requires annual quality reviews, verified customer satisfaction ratings, and factory-level training on RUUD systems. Reaves Nelson founded the company in 2023, and we operate from Daphne, serving all of Baldwin County.

What does your warranty cover?

Every installation includes the manufacturer’s warranty on equipment (typically 5 to 10 years on parts, longer on the compressor) plus our labor warranty on installation work. Professional maintenance at least once per year is required to keep most manufacturer warranties valid.

Do you work on commercial buildings?

Yes. We handle restaurants, offices, retail spaces, churches, warehouses, and commercial buildings across Baldwin County. Commercial systems need different maintenance schedules, faster emergency response, and service timed around business operations.
