AC Not Cooling? 7 Things to Check Before Calling for Repair

Published: Wednesday, Oct 15

Your house is getting warm and the AC doesn’t seem to be doing its job. Before you call for repair, there are several common causes of “AC not cooling” calls that Baldwin County homeowners can check and often fix themselves in a few minutes. We get these calls constantly during the summer rush, and a surprising number of them turn out to be something the homeowner could have resolved without a service visit.

That said, if you run through this entire list and the system still isn’t cooling, the problem needs professional diagnosis. Call (251) 300-9817 and we’ll get a technician to you.

Check the Thermostat First

It sounds too simple to be the answer, but thermostat issues account for more AC repair service calls than most people would believe. Make sure the thermostat is set to COOL mode, not heat or fan-only. Check that the set temperature is actually lower than the current room temperature. If the thermostat uses batteries, replace them. Dead or dying batteries cause erratic behavior that looks exactly like a system malfunction. And if you have a programmable or smart thermostat, check that nobody accidentally changed the schedule.

Check the Breaker

Power surges and electrical storms are common in Baldwin County, and they trip HVAC breakers regularly. Your system actually uses two breakers in most installations — one for the indoor air handler and one for the outdoor condenser. If either one has tripped, the system won’t cool properly. Go to your electrical panel, find the breakers labeled for the HVAC system, and reset any that are in the tripped position. If the breaker trips again immediately after resetting, don’t keep resetting it — that indicates an electrical fault that needs professional attention.

Check the Air Filter

A severely clogged air filter can restrict airflow enough to make the system seem like it’s failing when it’s actually just suffocating. In Baldwin County’s pollen-heavy, humidity-rich environment, filters clog faster than the manufacturer’s recommended replacement interval. Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see any light through it, replace it and give the system 15-20 minutes to recover. A clogged filter can also cause the evaporator coil to freeze — if you see ice on the indoor unit, the filter is likely the starting point.

Check the Outdoor Unit

Walk outside and look at the condenser. Is it running? Is the fan spinning? If the condenser is completely silent while the indoor fan is blowing, the outdoor unit lost power or a component like the contactor or capacitor failed. If the fan is running but making unusual sounds — grinding, buzzing, rattling — something mechanical needs attention. Also check for debris: leaves, branches, mulch, or anything blocking airflow around the unit. Clear at least two feet of space on all sides.

Check Your Vents and Returns

Make sure all supply vents in every room are open and unobstructed. Furniture pushed against a vent, rugs laid over floor registers, and closed vents in “unused” rooms all restrict airflow. Closing too many vents doesn’t save energy — it creates back pressure that reduces system efficiency. Check the return air grille too — if it’s dirty or blocked, the system can’t pull enough air through to cool effectively.

Check for Ice

If you see ice forming on the outdoor unit, on the refrigerant lines, or on the indoor evaporator coil, turn the system off immediately and switch the fan to “On” to help melt the ice. Running an iced-over system damages the compressor. Ice formation is usually caused by a dirty filter, low refrigerant, a dirty evaporator coil, or restricted airflow. Once the ice melts, replace the filter if it was dirty and try restarting. If ice reforms, you need professional AC repair.

Check for Unusual Sounds or Smells

A system that runs but makes sounds it didn’t used to make is telling you something. Grinding usually means a motor bearing issue. Hissing might indicate a refrigerant leak. Buzzing could be a contactor or capacitor. And if you smell something musty or notice a burning smell, turn the system off and call for service. Our HVAC noise guide breaks down what different sounds mean and which ones are urgent.

When It’s Time to Call

If you’ve checked all seven items and the system still isn’t cooling properly, the problem requires professional diagnosis: low refrigerant, a failing compressor, a bad expansion valve, or electrical issues inside the system. The sooner you call, the less likely the problem cascades into something more expensive.

Our maintenance membership catches most of these problems during routine tune-ups before they leave you hot in July. Call (251) 300-9817 — we schedule most repair appointments within a day, often same-day during summer.
